Yesterday I had the first opportunity to seriously test my new radio, the Kenwood TS-590s.
My friend Dirk PA2C who obtained the same radio 3 months ago also came down to the PI4COM conteststation and our plan was to get a few hours of ARRL SSB Contest fun on 20 and 15 meters. The band showed to be in good shape so : Let the fun begin……
This turned out to be different. Whilst stopping to open the gate the car engine stopped and did not start again. Dirk helped me to push the car to the shack so we could install the station whilst I contacted the road-service for assistance.
Also Dirk had his share of bad luck as the 15m antenne turned out to be out of order. High SWR whilst hearing the W’s and VE’s rolling is no good for the spirit. Luckely Dirk could have some fun on 17 and 12 meters whilst I was working W’s on 20m for an hour or two.
Nett operating time was just over an hour good for 151 W/VE’s in the log and a TS590s proving to be a superb receiving radio.
What happened to the car? The battery was SK. With some help I managed to get home (luckily 10 minutes drive only) and today a new battery was ordered to get the car running again.
